TRE Dictionary
Expedited service is a transportation arrangement with an accelerated or specifically agreed schedule. The useful question is what date or deadline the mover commits to, and what pricing and conditions apply.
In plain English
“Expedited” should describe a service you can identify in writing, not just an expectation that the truck will move quickly. Confirm whether the promise means delivery on a date, by a date or within a shorter window.
Formal moving usage and pricing
FMCSA’s glossary describes expedited service as transportation by a set date with charges based on a higher minimum weight. A minimum used for billing does not change the shipment’s measured weight.
Allied’s 2019 tariff, item 303, illustrates an on-or-before commitment and explicitly separates expedited service from exclusive use of a vehicle. This historical example does not establish today’s price, eligibility or terms.
A practical example
“Delivery by September 18” and “delivery on September 18” are different promises. A by-date service may allow earlier delivery. If you cannot receive the goods until the 18th, resolve that conflict before booking.
Questions to ask
- Which pickup or delivery event is promised, and on what date?
- Does the date concern arrival at a warehouse or delivery to my residence?
- What minimum, premium or other price applies?
- Are dedicated equipment or exclusive space included?
- What exclusions, delay remedy and notice requirements apply?
Responsibility and handoff
The estimator and coordinator should record the purchased commitment. Dispatch needs the deadline, access restrictions and customer availability. The customer should keep the written terms and know whom to contact if the plan changes. Faster transit alone does not reserve a building elevator or make a residence ready.
