TRE Dictionary
Local Move
A local move generally describes a relocation performed within a relatively limited geographic area, often priced by time, local tariff, or another market-specific method.
In plain English
It is a nearby move rather than a long-distance relocation.
Why it matters
“Local” is an operating description, not always a complete legal classification. State lines, authority, tariff rules, and service areas still matter.
TRE common-language definition
Local Move: A short-distance relocation performed within a defined local market or service area.

Who this affects and where it sits
Customer · Sales · Dispatcher · Crew. Define service area and pricing during inquiry and estimating; confirm travel, access and destination tasks before dispatch.
Responsibility and handoff
Ask the provider to document its local service boundary, how travel and working time are charged, what the crew will do, and how changes are approved. Pass the same scope from sales to the crew.
Common misunderstanding
“Local” does not promise hourly billing, a single national mileage cutoff, or intrastate jurisdiction. “Full service” describes the agreed tasks; labor-only work may leave transportation to a separate party.
Sources and practical guidance
State pricing frameworks differ: North Carolina’s guide and Washington’s guide use different mileage distinctions. Confirm the rules applicable to your move.
