TRE Dictionary
Crating
Crating is the construction or use of a rigid protective container for an item that needs more protection or support than standard packing provides.
In plain English
Artwork, stone, glass, electronics, antiques, and unusually fragile or shaped items may require custom crating.
What materials are used for crating?
A crating plan can combine a rigid wood container with internal blocking, bracing and cushioning. Depending on the item, a specialist may also specify protective wrapping, foam, moisture barriers or anti-static protection. The outer crate and the protection inside it perform different jobs.
For a supplier example, Craters & Freighters describes custom wood crates and protective packaging options. This illustrates available methods, not a universal specification or a TRE provider endorsement. Source reviewed September 15, 2026.
Is crating the same as packing?
No. Packing is the broader preparation of belongings for transport. Crating adds rigid containment for an item that needs it. Confirm the proposed internal protection as well as the container, and ask whether measurement, crating, uncrating and removal are included in the written price.
Why it matters
Crating can involve specialized materials, labor, measurements, third-party vendors, and additional handling time. If crating is required, it should be identified before move day when practical and reflected in the scope and pricing.

Stakeholder perspectives
The specialist needs dimensions, fragility, handling needs, and intended transport conditions.
Responsibility and handoff
Confirm who measures, builds, packs, opens, and removes the crate, including timing and charges.
Common misunderstanding
A crate does not eliminate all risk. Uncrating and crate removal may be separate services.
