**TRE Dictionary**

## Volume

**Volume** is the amount of physical space a shipment occupies, commonly expressed in cubic feet or cubic meters.

### In plain English

Volume tells you how much room the shipment takes up, while weight tells you how heavy it is.

### Why it matters

Volume affects truck, container, warehouse, and capacity planning and is often used in international and small-shipment models.

### Who this affects

Customer · Surveyor · Estimator · Dispatch

### Where this sits in the move

Survey → Estimate → Capacity planning

### Stakeholder perspectives

Customers may count rooms; dispatch needs space. Identify whether volume is for planning or a charging basis.

### Responsibility and handoff

Record units, included items, packing assumptions, and revisions, and share the same version with capacity planners.

### Common misunderstanding

Volume and weight are different measures. A room count or rough conversion does not establish actual shipment weight.

### TRE common-language definition

> **Volume:** The three-dimensional space occupied by the goods included in a move.

### Cube and Shipment Cube

In moving conversations, cube is shorthand for cubic space. Shipment cube should identify the volume of the goods in the stated scope. Equipment cube describes available space in a truck or container. Label which one is meant, the units, and whether the figure is estimated or measured.

A cube sheet supports an item-based volume estimate; it is not a scale ticket. [Atlas’s moving dictionary](https://www.atlasvanlines.com/resources/moving-tips-tools/moving-dictionary-resources?ref=relocationecosystem.com) describes cube and the table of measurements used to estimate volume. Any weight conversion remains an estimate and should name its assumption.
