**TRE Dictionary**

A **service management fee** is a charge described as payment for managing, administering or coordinating services. In a relocation agreement, its actual scope must come from the provider’s written terms. TRE uses the phrase descriptively, not as a standardized household-goods tariff category.

## In plain English

Paying someone to coordinate a move is different from paying for the truck, packing or storage itself. A management package may include some underlying services, however, so read the inclusions before adding separate costs to your budget.

## What the description should explain

Look for specific responsibilities: scheduling, provider coordination, expense processing, customer support or account oversight. Do not assume every activity is included. Identify who performs the work, who invoices it, who pays and what happens when a service fails or changes.

## A hypothetical example

An agreement lists $2,500 for moving services and a separate $200 coordination fee. If both are additional and payable by the same customer, those two components total $2,700\. If a $2,700 package already includes coordination, adding $200 again would double count it. These are invented amounts, not a typical fee or market benchmark.

## Questions to ask

- Which tasks and deliverables does the fee buy?
- Is it required, optional or included in another price?
- Is it fixed, recurring, per service or percentage-based?
- Are supplier charges separate, passed through or marked up?
- Does an employer pay it, or is the relocating person responsible?
- What cancellation, refund and service-change terms apply?

## Responsibility and handoff

The coordinator and customer or employer should agree on the scope, approval process and billing basis. Pass those terms to the people authorizing services and reconciling invoices. The fee’s name alone does not identify whether the provider is the mover, a broker or another coordinator.

## Evidence and scope

[Realogy’s 2017 annual report, filed with the SEC in 2018](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1398987/000139898718000017/r10-k.htm?ref=relocationecosystem.com), describes bundled outsourcing management fees covering multiple relocation services in its Cartus business. This historical example supports the distinction between coordinating services and individual supplier charges; it does not establish a universal definition, current offering or standard rate.
