## Net Weight

**Net weight** is the shipment weight calculated by subtracting the corresponding tare weight from loaded gross weight.

### In plain English

Gross minus tare equals net. For example, 24,600 pounds gross − 18,200 pounds tare = 6,400 pounds net. The result depends on a valid pair of measurements under the applicable weighing procedure.

### Why it matters

Net weight can support capacity planning and weight-dependent charges. It is different from the estimated weight used before loading and from any minimum quantity used to calculate a tariff charge.

### From measured weight to the bill

If the measured shipment is 4,000 pounds but an applicable tariff item has a 5,000-pound minimum, the record should show both figures and explain their roles. The minimum does not make the actual net weight 5,000 pounds.

The tariff establishes applicable rates and calculation rules, while the written estimate establishes the price commitment. A net-weight result alone does not rewrite a binding estimate or establish every charge due. Ask for the tariff item, rate, minimum and service record behind the calculation.

### Responsibility and handoff

Keep the net calculation linked to signed weight tickets and the shipment or bill-of-lading identifier. For covered origin-weighed interstate shipments, a timely requested reweigh determines the billing weight under [49 CFR 375.517](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-375.517?ref=relocationecosystem.com); the rule does not simply select whichever weighing is lower.

### TRE common-language definition

> **Net Weight:** The calculated shipment weight after the corresponding tare is deducted from gross weight, distinct from a tariff billing minimum.
