- Description: A lift van groups household goods in a rigid shipping crate. Understand capacity, consolidation, packing scope and the handoffs to confirm.

**A lift van, also written liftvan, is a rigid shipping crate used to contain household goods as a handling unit.** Common designs use lumber and plywood. Lift vans can travel inside larger freight containers and may be used for international moving, domestic shipping or temporary storage.

## Size is a specification, not a universal definition

International Wood Industries lists a standard Type II lift van at approximately 196 cubic feet and also offers custom sizes. Treat that as a supplier example. Confirm the actual unit’s internal usable space, outside dimensions and permitted loaded weight before deciding what will fit.

A crate’s advertised size does not tell you how much furniture can be packed safely inside it. Item shape, protective materials and loading arrangement also matter. Ask whether the quoted volume represents usable space, outside cube or the shipment volume used for billing.

## How it fits into a move

A lift van can keep a group of items together while the larger transportation arrangement remains shared. Rainier Overseas describes consolidated shipments in which lift vans wait at a port facility until enough freight is available to fill a larger container. Having a separate crate therefore does not, by itself, mean a dedicated ocean container or immediate departure.

## Questions to carry through the handoff

- How many lift vans are planned, and how will each be identified against the inventory?
- Who packs, closes, transports, opens and empties them?
- Does the quote include crate materials, packing, handling and destination services?
- What happens if additional units or storage are needed?
- Who confirms the packaging requirements for the destination and the promised transit schedule?

## Proposed TRE common-language definition

Lift van: a specified rigid shipping crate that groups household goods into an identifiable handling unit, with its capacity, packing scope and transportation arrangement documented for the move.
