**TRE Dictionary**

## Inventory

An **inventory** is the structured record of the items included in a move. Depending on the service, it may identify individual pieces, cartons, item numbers, condition, room location, or handling notes.

### In plain English

It is the move's item list and one of the main records used to connect estimating, loading, transportation, delivery, and claims.

### Why it matters

If the inventory changes without the rest of the move record changing with it, pricing, labor, capacity, and customer expectations can quickly become inaccurate.

### Who this affects

Customer · Surveyor · Driver · Crew · Claims

### Where this sits in the move

Survey → Loading → Delivery

### Stakeholder perspectives

A planning inventory, loading inventory, and condition record serve different purposes. Identify the version being used.

### Responsibility and handoff

Keep item identifiers, revisions, and delivery exceptions traceable across the customer, carrier, and crew.

### Common misunderstanding

An estimating list is not automatically the final loading or condition record. Unmatched versions can create disputes.

### TRE common-language definition

> **Inventory:** The structured record of the goods included in a relocation and the information needed to identify, plan, handle, and reconcile those goods.

**Primary consumer guidance:** [FMCSA — Pickup of My Shipment of Household Goods](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move/how-to/subpartE?ref=relocationecosystem.com) explains inventory preparation, condition notes, signatures and copies for U.S. interstate household-goods moves. Review the listed items and condition notes before signing, note disagreements, and retain a copy. Other move types may follow different rules and contracts.

**Operating practice:** The stakeholder and handoff guidance in this entry is TRE's practical framework. See [TRE's Sources & Evidence standards](https://relocationecosystem.com/sources-evidence/) for the distinction between primary-source requirements and operating guidance.

### Put it into practice

Confirm which inventory version is current and how additions, removals or storage changes will reach the next responsible person. Keep the inventory connected to the estimate and handling instructions.
